5 suggestions for beginners related to Iyengar Yoga

  1. Start with basic classes: At Our Yoga Place, we offer a variety of Iyengar Yoga classes. It is very important to begin with a basic class so that your experience is correct.  As a beginner, it's important to work on improving your form and alignment. Some basic poses that you can start with include Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog), and Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend).

  2. DO use props: If your body needs support, do provide it with props. Iyengar Yoga is known for its use of props such as blocks, straps, blankets, chairs, wall ropes, and bolsters. These props can help beginners to modify poses and make them more accessible, while also allowing them to work on their alignment.

  3. Focus on alignment: Most of our pains and aches come out of repetitive wrong postures. Considering this fact it's of utmost importance to correct the movement patterns we have created. Iyengar Yoga is all about precision and alignment. As a beginner, you should focus on aligning your body in each pose, and making sure that you are maintaining proper form throughout the practice.

  4. Practice regularly: Consistency is the key element for practitioners to feel the substantial difference in their bodies. Like any other form of exercise, regular practice is necessary to improve your skills in Iyengar Yoga. Try to practice at least 2-3 times a week to see progress.

  5. Find an Iyengar Yoga studio: It's important to find a proper ambiance for your Yoga practice. Ample light, ventilation, and availability of props are crucial for Iyengar Yoga practice. Having an Iyengar Yoga teacher who can guide you through your practice and provide you with personalized feedback and adjustments is a blessing.
